International Folk Dance in Richmond
Richmond Virginia supports two separate International Dance Clubs. Everyone knows everyone in both groups, and there's a lot of trading of resources and responsibility (especially when planning for big performances.) What the two groups share is a love for the music and rhythms of dances from exotic foreign places. Most of the dances come from European and Near-Eastern countries. The dances vary from energetic and complicated to low-impact and simple.
The International Folk Dance Club of Richmond, or IFDC, meets every 1st and 3rd Fridays (except state and city holidays) from 7:00 until 10:30pm at Dumbarton Elementary School, 9000 Hungary Spring Rd, (near Staples Mill Rd & Hungary Spring). There is usually teaching of new dances in addition to open requests. You can call Linda Salter at (804)360-2630 for more information.
The Festival Folk Dance Club meets every Monday evening (except state or city holidays) from 7:30 until 9:30 at the Humphrey Calder Community Center located at 414 N. Thompson St., Richmond VA, 23221 (south of Patterson, next to fire station). Contact Mary Jean Linn at (804)643-6707 for more information.
Though we dance primarily for fun, we sometimes perform for groups such as schools, churches, nursing homes and hospitals. Usually we will perform in the Annual Richmond International Food Festival.
It works best when we dance on an empty stomach.
Twice a year, there is a retreat in Tidewater Virginia sponsored
by the Virginia Beach Folk Dance Club. Many of the Richmond
dancers will travel to Makemie Woods and dance until the wee
hours of the morning, then get up, have breakfast, and dance til
the afternoon. So far, no one has been caught by the Dance
Addiction Interdiction Forces.
