When we met, we both knew we wanted to see the wider world. The two years leading up to our marriage were full of open-ended plans. Kathleen began studying for her Masters in Photography and Henry changed jobs at work. Then we got the opportunity to move to the New York City area and make enough money to fund our European tour.

We now live in Los Angeles, CA, USA

H. Woods grew up as Henry in Richmond, Virginia with a wide range of interests including international folk dancing, science, computers, and fantasy literature. He went to an alternative high school and then on to college (Europeans would call it University) at Swarthmore in Pennsylvania. During college he traveled twice to the west coast, once to France and once for a summer to Alaska.

After college he took up organic farming of vegetables and hay near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. To pay the bills he worked nights in a restaurant. That lasted until he returned to Virginia to take up residence on a farm his mother had purchased in Hanover County, Virginia.

There he fell back into his high school trade of programming, and his old fascination stole him away from farming. After rising through the ranks into management, he met Kathleen and began a new chapter.

In the Winter of 2005, Henry completed a Masters in Screenwriting program at the School of Cinema and Television at USC, the University of Southern California, one of the premier film schools in the USA.

Henry writes the text for this website. You may read his writing resume to keep up to date with his projects.

Because he's the 4th in a line of Henry's, to distinguish himself from his lineage, he writes under the name H. Woods McLaughlin.

Kathleen grew up in Downers Grove, a suburb of Chicago, until her senior year in high school when she moved to Richmond Virginia. She went to college at Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with degrees in Psychology and Photography.

After college, she landed a life changing volunteer position as a social worker in Belfast, Northern Ireland. There she spent over a year walking the troubled neighborhoods and helping mend some of its broken lives.

In 1995 she was searching for a career when she met Henry at a contra dance. It was then she found her waltzing partner. He introduced to her the world of the internet, sci-fi and supported her in getting an  MFA in Photography at VCU beginning in 1997.

Kathleen spent the 2001/2002 academic year teaching photography at VCU and Ithaca College. On the strength of her Romanian Photo Documentary Work, Kathleen has been awarded Fulbright and IREX (NEH funded) grants for 2002-2003 and during that time she continued her documentary fieldwork and taught at the Ion Andreescu Academy of Arts in Cluj Napoca.

She is now back in the states teaching photography at Otis College of Art and Design while continuing her exhibitions and developing new bodies of work from her last year in Romania and Turkey.

Read her vita which she keeps updated with her shows and awards.

We are in Europe again from August of 2002 until August 2003. Check back to see our updated travels!
